What is a 301 redirect?
A 301 redirect tells browsers and Google that a page has moved permanently. Visitors land on the new page automatically, and the rankings the old page earned are passed across to the new one.
When do I need redirects?
Whenever a page address changes: a redesign, a move to a new platform, renaming pages, or merging old blog posts. Without them, old links and Google results lead to “page not found” errors.
Should I redirect everything to my homepage?
No. Google treats a redirect to an unrelated page, like the homepage, much like a missing page. Match each old page to its closest new page instead.
What are redirect chains?
A chain is when one redirect points to another redirect, like A to B to C. They slow pages down and can weaken rankings. This tool flags them so you can point A straight to C.
