Do you really need SEO as a small business?

Not every business needs a big SEO campaign, but almost every business needs the basics. Here’s how to tell what level makes sense for you.

The honest answer

If people search Google for what you do, SEO matters. That covers most small businesses, from trades and clinics to cafés, consultants, retailers and online stores. But "needing SEO" doesn’t always mean paying an agency every month. For some businesses, getting the basics right is enough.

When the basics are enough

You probably don’t need an ongoing SEO campaign if:

  • You’re booked out through referrals and repeat clients
  • You serve a small niche where few competitors exist online
  • Your goal is simply to look credible when people check you out

Even then, do the basics: a complete Google Business Profile, a fast website, clear service pages and a steady flow of reviews. They’re mostly free and make a real difference. Our free SEO guide walks you through each one.

When ongoing SEO pays off

It’s worth investing in properly if:

  • Competitors are showing up above you for searches you want
  • You want to grow without relying on referrals or ads
  • You’re spending a lot on Google Ads and want to reduce it over time
  • You’re launching a new service or moving into a new area
  • Your customers research online before choosing someone

Local business or national?

The kind of SEO you need depends on who your customers are. A plumber, dentist or café needs to show up for people nearby, which is mostly about your Google Business Profile, reviews and location pages. Our local SEO checklist covers that side.

A business that sells online or works with clients Australia-wide is competing on a bigger field. That’s more about in-depth content, links from other websites and a technically solid site. It usually takes longer, but the potential audience is far bigger.

What SEO costs a small business

In Australia, ongoing SEO for a small business commonly runs from around $1,500 to $3,500 a month, depending on competition and how much content is involved. A one-off audit and fix-up is another option if you just want the foundations sorted.

Be wary of anything much cheaper than that. Very low-cost SEO packages often rely on automated links or generic content that can do more harm than good.

What to expect

SEO takes time, usually three to six months before you see meaningful movement. It’s a long-term investment, and the payoff is a steady stream of enquiries that doesn’t stop the moment you stop paying. If you need leads this month, ads can bridge the gap: our guide to SEO vs Google Ads explains how the two work together.

What good SEO work looks like

Whoever you hire, you should be able to see what they’re doing. Good ongoing SEO usually includes:

  • A clear plan of which searches you’re targeting and why
  • Fixes to your site’s structure, speed and technical setup
  • New or improved pages that answer what your customers ask
  • Work on your Google Business Profile and reviews
  • A monthly report showing rankings, traffic and, most importantly, enquiries

If a provider can’t explain their work in plain English, that’s a red flag.

A quick self-check

  • Search for your main service and area. Do you appear on page one?
  • Is your Google Business Profile complete, with recent reviews?
  • Does each of your main services have its own page?
  • Does your site load quickly on a phone?

If you answered no to two or more, there’s low-hanging fruit worth picking before anything else. If you’d like a hand, here’s how we approach SEO.
